Sacred Places - Spiritual Images
In 2014 I exhibited a series of documentary images in Dubai. Each featured a spiritual location photographed during a decade of world travel. The prints were published in black and white.
Cambodian Temples
The first four images were taken during a tour of the temples around Angkor in Cambodia in 2012. Here you can see the temples of Bayon, Preah Khan and Ta Promh. The fourth image features a temple on the jungle a few hours north of Angkor. These images really do speak for themselves – all feature quite remarkable structures from many years ago.
Taj Mahal, Agra, India
This image of the Taj Mahal features slightly less obvious view than most pictures of this structure. I shot this from a rowing boat at the back of the temple to the almost haunting sounds of a hindu funeral.
Voodoo Temple, Benin
The next two images feature scenes from French West Africa. The first shows a voodoo temple in Benin. The second shows one of the remarkable mud mosques scattered around Bani, Burkina Faso.

Religious Mural, Tehran, Iran
Although there are many beautiful structures in Tehran I selected this image of a religious mural for the series. There are many striking murals in the city. Some are religious, others political and several are decorative. I particularly like the authenticity the white car adds to the scene.
Jetvnaramaya Stupa, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka.
One of the largest stupas in the world can be found at Sri Lanka's former capital. The ancient city of Anuradhapura is another of the world's wonders.
Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, Myanmar
The last of my photos features the magnificent golden stupas of Yangon in Myanmar. (Formerly Rangoon in Burma). The vista is dominated by the splendid Shwedagon Pagoda in the foreground.
These images are from a private collection and do not feature elsewhere on the Mr Smith website. If you would like to know more about them or others in the series please get in touch.
